    IntraLASIK: The Safest LASIK Yet
    Chris J. Cabler, M.D.
    Houston, TX
    lasik houston specialist

Using the new IntraLase-FS laser to create the corneal flap, we are now performing LASIK surgery without a blade. Traditionally, the LASIK flap was created using a microkeratome with a blade. Although complications during LASIK are relatively rare, when they do occur the microkeratome portion of the procedure is often the source of the problem. The new blade free LASIK procedure is called IntraLASIK and is more PRECISE and SAFER then ever before.

Currently, the Allegretto Wave is the fastest vision correction laser available in the United States. How to Choose Your LASIK Surgeon?

    Houston, TX
Mary T. Green cornea and refractive specialist

There are flashy LASIK ads everywhere attempting to lure the price-conscious consumer. It is important to note that LASIK is a lifetime investment and your surgeon should be chosen wisely. Taking the extra time to research the credentials and experience of the surgeon is important in achieving the best possible results.

The outcome of any surgical procedure is dependent on the skills and experience of the surgeon and the technology at that surgeon’s disposal.

One of the challenges that LASIK surgeons have faced since the successful introduction of LASIK surgery almost 10 years ago is eliminating the need for reading glasses. Almost everyone over age 40 will develop the need for reading glasses. Comparably, 30 percent of the population has some type of refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism) correctable with LASIK surgery.

New Standard Of Care In Laser Vision Correction
    IntraLASIK - IntraLase
    Jeffrey Whitsett, M.D.

    Houston & Corpus Christi, TX
jeffrey jeff whitsett lasik refractive cataract surgeon corpus christi

The Whitsett Vision Group is now one of a select number of practices nationwide able to offer IntraLASIK using the FDA-approved IntraLase FS laser. IntraLase has the potential to become the key ingredient to optimizing visual results in laser vision correction surgery as I will explain in this article. This technology provides a less invasive, computer-controlled approach to the important first step in LASIK surgery - making the flap.

By replacing the traditional approach with a silent, tiny beam of laser light to open the flap for actual surgery, IntraLASIK dramatically reduces the risk of complication.

We hear advertising on the radio, tv, and in the newspaper almost every day that LASIK is foolproof. The truth is that it takes a lot of trust to put your eyes in someone else’s hands, so it is important that when you’re ready for laser eye surgery, you see someone with expert training and education who will be up front and honest about your vision.

Q - After LASIK, will I still have to wear reading glasses?

A LASIK patients may also need to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to read or do close work. The need for reading correction is age-related and generally is first noted during the ages of 40-45. This condition, presbyopia, is not caused by LASIK; it occurs as part of the natural aging process. Presbyopia is the inability to refocus the eyes from a distance to up close. Reading glasses help refocus the eyes and allow that patient to see up close. Since LASIK corrects distance vision, nearsighted patients who are in the habit of removing their glasses or contacts lenses to see well up close will need to start wearing reading glasses for close work after they have LASIK. It is possible that a rare patient will need reading glasses several years earlier than expected after LASIK surgery. (see next question about Monovision)

Q - What is Monovision? Is it a solution for presbyopia?

For patients over forty, one approach to address presbyopia is called monovision and involves intentionally making one eye nearsighted. This eye will have good near vision and blurred distance vision, while the other eye will have good distance vision and blurred near vision. However, not everyone can successfully adjust to monovision. Even successful monovision patients may require glasses for specific visual tasks (e.g. driving at night). Also, it is important to note that presbyopia does progress as we age. If the amount of presbyopia progresses beyond the degree of nearsightedness in the eye corrected for reading, then reading glasses may become necessary. Patients interested in monovision may benefit from a trial period with monovision contacts lenses prior to surgery.
